I would probably do one of two things:
1. a masters in CS part time if you want to work in the US - possibly via a recognizable American school
2. a bootcamp and try to convert to a software role at your current company - can be good if that option is available and you want to stay in Canada. This option might take a couple of steps, like moving to support engineering first.
If you want to work in the US under TN status as a programmer you need a master's or bachelor's in something computer related.
Regardless I would spend as much time as possible with engineers at your company and trying to understand and learn the code if possible.
